I have been blogging less and reading a bit more in the past few weeks. One of the things I've noticed is since the Democrats took control of the United States House of Representatives, there has been a very unbecoming spew of vitriol and hatred aimed at Mrs. Pelosi from hordes of St. Blog's parishioners that is unusual for them and very unbecoming of people I respect and enjoy reading.
I am a registered Republican, and a staunch conservative of the type exemplified by Sam Brownback, so it may come as a surprise when I fall into line behind staunch liberal Todd at Catholic Sensibility. He writes:
The internet has created a particularly emboldened form of Catholic. I don’t know what they’re like in their life away from the computer, but how much chit-chat at parish coffee & donuts is peppered with gracious bits like “that phony, squinty-eyed smile,” or “What. An. A*****e,” or “she’ll make the trains run on time, too,” or “Partial-Birth Abortion Drinan” or other pieces.
Where does this stuff come from?
I understand the frustration. I am seamlessly pro-life, and I dispair of the lives which will be lost to abortion and embryonic stem cell research should Mrs. Pelosi get her heart's desire.
There are two ways to deal with this:
1. Support Mrs. Pelosi's opponent in the next election.
2. Ask God to change Mrs. Pelosi's "heart's desire".
The first option helps in the short term. It removes Mrs. Pelosi who currently is a nominal Catholic, and replaces her with some Republican who may very well be in the mold of Rudolph Guiliani or Arnold Schwartzenegger who are also nominal Catholics but with a different letter after their name (R).
The second option helps turn Mrs. Pelosi into a force for good. It asks God to pour his Divine Mercy all over Mrs. Pelosi and use her considerable political acumen to the benefit of the unborn.
It also helps us love our "enemies" and seek the greatest good for them which is ultimately the greatest good for all of us and the greatest good for God.
If we need a saint to help us, St. Paul seems like the perfect choice. As Saul of Tarsus, he oversaw the stoning of St. Stephen, patron of Deacons and proto-Martyr. Jesus saw fit to reveal himself to Saul and strike him blind, and in the process bring about a conversion of his heart and from the darkess came Paul, one of the greatest evangelists that our Church has ever seen.
If a murderous Pharisee like Saul of Tarsus could be turned around, then Mrs. Pelosi should be a piece of cake.
I am going to light candles for all the nominal Catholics both Democrat and Republican. I'm going to pray for them that they receive a profound conversion of heart through the work of the Holy Spirit. And I'm going to especially pray for Nancy Pelosi.
