This may seem like a strange movie for a Catholic fellow to be reviewing, but one of my guilty pleasures is watching movies and reading books that fictionally deal with the battle with Satan.
Oh, sure. I know most of us do spiritual battle with Satan on an ongoing basis, but I'm talking about physical battle, the thwarting of Satan's plans to hold dominion over the world.
Every so often, it's good to see Satan in a physical form, if only to reinforce the understand that he is real. After all, we all know that Satan's greatest accomplishment has been convincing people he doesn't exist.
In the 80's I collected Ghost Rider comic books (which I recently sold on eBay). I was a huge fan of the story... a young stunt biker sells his soul to the devil to save his father from the ravages of cancer, and is cursed to ride the night as a flaming skeleton bringing evildoers to justice.
That always confused me. Why in the world would the devil give all this power to this guy to be used against him?
The movie answers that sufficiently, and in an interesting way. In addition to that, it is the most spectacular use of CGI fire that I've ever seen.
All in all, if you like adventure movies with a taste of the occult in a somwhat theologically true storyline, with great special effects, you'll love this movie. I know I did. This is going to be one I buy when the DVD comes out. But don't wait. See it at the movies. The one with the biggest screen and the best sound you can afford.
