Over the two years I've been blogging*, I have "met" a lot of interesting people in St. Blog's parish.
I had fooled around with a chat room before but I had settled on IRC because having worked with the platform for so long, I knew it. However I've become tired of IRC (for numerous reasons), but not chatting.
So my host provides free RealChat chat rooms along with my web account, so I decided to go ahead and set up a chat room so folks who are interested in meeting each other and chatting real time can do so.
There is a bit of a catch. You need to have an account on this site and be logged in to chat (much like you need to be logged in to comment). This is to help mitigate people who might wish to pop into the chat and become abusive.
I am going to try and schedule chats on a regular basis (at least while I'll be there) and maybe set up "guests" who will be available for a question and answer session (I bet the Pope has internet access ;))
This doesn't mean you only have to stick to scheduled time. If you pop in and hang out when you're online, others may pop in too.
To get to the chat, all you have to do is click the "Chat" link on the left hand menu bar. That will take you to the chat page and if you are logged in, and have a Java™ capable browser, there should be no trouble. I'll be tweaking the colors and such later, and I'll even try and put a "who's in the chat room" indicator on my sidebar (though so far it's seemed a bit problematic).
