Newsweek covers this story in the standard clueless, disingenuous or outright fraudulent manner. Here's the headline of the article:
Higher Calling
A woman is ordained to the Catholic priesthood. Not surprisingly, the hierarchy does not approve.
What hierarchy? Did the mentally challenged drone who writes the headline not read the article? Hey doofus, here is the money quote:
Rowley’s ordination—which took place at Eden Theological Seminary, a progressive institution in Webster Groves, Mo.—is approved by the Ecumenical Catholic Communion, a group of churches that decline to recognize the authority of the pope but see themselves nevertheless as Catholic.
They don't recognize the authority of the pope. This means that they are not Roman Catholic, or any other approved rite that is in communion with Rome. A Protestant church who calls themselves Catholic (much like the Episcopal church who already ordain women) have ordained a woman. There is no news here.
Todd at Catholic Sensibility wonders what the fuss is...
I’m not quite sure why so many bloggers are all atwitter about this. That people define themselves as Catholic without the "Roman" is nothing new. Maybe the Newsweek coverage bothers them.
Exactimundo! It's the coverage. The fact that there is coverage of a non news item spinning it as some sort of breaking story gives the impression that this woman is Roman Catholic, and she's been ordained "without the hierarchy's *shudder* approval!".
American Papist puts it really well:
Update: I was thinking about this story a little bit more and I've decided something: I work for Newsweek. I've always felt like I deserved to work there and, well, now I do. I intend to submit my first article tomorrow. If they reject it, or make the absurd claim that I don't, in fact, work for them, I'm going to go public and proclaim:
"I work for Newsweek. Not Surprisingly, the Heirarchy of Newsweek does not approve."
I guess I'll declare myself a Newsweek reporter, photoshop a Newsweek ID, and get into all kinds of interesting places and speak with many interesting people.
Tony, crack reporter from Newsweek writes: "The Newsweek hierarchy is clueless, if they are going to cover religion, they need to assign someone who actually understands religion."
