Ann Coulter Needs To Be "Perfected"

I was reading my local bird cage liner this weekend, and I got treated to a column from Leonard Pitts, Jr. For a progressive, he's usually a coherent read, and sometimes he even makes a point. This week's column regarding the Coulter / Deutsch kerfluffle, was disappointing, and if I were thin skinned, I could probably take offense at it.

Mr. Pitts said:
Last week, Coulter said that in her perfect America, everyone would be a Christian. She said this to Donny Deutsch, who was hosting her on his CNBC program, The Big Idea. Deutsch, who is Jewish, expressed alarm. Whereupon Coulter told him that Jews simply needed to be ''perfected'' -- i.e., made to accept Jesus as savior. Which is, of course, one of the pillars (along with the slander of Christ's murder) supporting 2,000 years of pogroms, abuse and Holocaust.

So I decided to sent off an e-mail to Mr. Pitts, and I'll reproduce it below.

Dear Mr. Pitts,

I had the opportunity to read your column in my local paper where you referred to the "slander of Christ's murder". I guess I just don't get what you mean by this. Are you referring to the assertion that Christ was killed by "the Jews"? I happen to believe that Christ was killed by the Roman state after being set up by the Jewish hierarchy at the time (High Priest, Scribes and Pharisees). They couldn't have Jesus executed for blasphemy, so they turned him in for sedition. If you refer to these people as "the Jews" as many people refer to the current U.S. administration as "The United States" you'd be correct.

I read through the transcript of the exchange between Ms. Coulter and Mr. Deutsch three or four times looking for a statement, or impression that for Ms. Coulter "in her perfect America everyone would be Christian".

What she did say (and badly) what that Jews need to be "perfected". Ann Coulter is a right wing "bomb-thrower". She is not a theologian. She really ought to leave theology to the professionals (of which I don't count myself).

Mr. Deutsch, as a practicing Jew, must believe that he has it right, and everyone who is not Jewish has it wrong. He must believe that Christians are laboring under a 2000 year old hoax or fraud. If he doesn't, why is he Jewish? Ms. Coulter labors under the assumption that Christ is her Savior (the Messiah promised in the Torah), and since Mr. Deutsch doesn't believe that, he doesn't have the completeness of faith. I believe that since Ms. Coulter isn't Catholic, she is not "perfected" either, because she doesn't have Sacred Tradition and the teaching authority of Apostolic succession.

Do I believe everyone in the world ought to be Catholic? You bet. I believe it is the most complete expression of belief in and worship of almighty God. To wish lesser for you would be uncharitable in the extreme. Do I think the United States would be a better country if everyone were a live-out-the-faith kind of Catholic? You bet.

But if you took those words of mine, and twisted them into some assertion that I want all non-Catholics sent to the gulags it would be clueless at best, and disingenuous calumny at worst. This also applies to the statement Ms. Coulter made.

Since I like to think the best of people, I'll assume you're clueless.

The rest is just ramped up rhetoric designed to sell papers.

And you're different than Ann Coulter, how?

Sincerely,

Tony
