Are You a Proud Neo Cath?

Are you a Neo Cath?In the spirit of Ratzingers Rottweilers, I decided to have a little fun myself. I am not a graphic artist, and I did the best I could so don't laugh. I am introducing:

The Proud Neo Cath Button

Are you a proud Neo Cath? You're probably asking what a Neo Cath is. Well, it looks like the term was used most recently by Father Joe O'Leary who is a "Spirit of Vatican II" priest. He recently outlined what he believes a Neo Cath is in a post called The Rise of the Neocaths.

Chris at Against The Grain distills it nicely:
  • That we "tend to sexual puritanism . . . vocal advocates and practitioners of a strictly-interpreted concept of sexual fidelity, with a strong emphasis on procreative sexuality"
  • that we engage in " combative apologetics . . . [devoting] treasures of ingenuity to proving that the Church has never changed her teaching on anything -- not on usury, slavery, torture, the Inquisition, the Crusades, and above all not on sexual matters" (what's this preoccupation with sex?)
  • that we are "'young fogeys' -- [taking] a delight in sporting old-fashioned references, such as Chesterton, Belloc, C.S. Lewis, Garrigou-Lagrange . . . [yearning] for an idealized church of Pius XII, a vibrant flawless Catholicism that never was"
  • that we "combine biblical and magisterial fundamentalism . . . in complete contempt of biblical scholarship and hermeneutics"
  • that we are "ideological and political rightists [whose] papolatry commonly goes hand in hand with Busholatry"
Except for the "papiolatry and the busholatry" which are addressed in numerous responses to the good father's post, I guess that describes me pretty well. Clarifying it a little better than me other bloggers have written at the bottom of my post Fr. O'Leary and the "NeoCaths".

I number myself a proud member of the Neo Cath tribe, and I'm going to plunk this button on my blog to show the world.

The motto of the club is "Welcome to the REAL Catholic Church, 'Neo'" which is a cheesy takeoff on The Matrix, but explains that the REAL Catholic Church is the one defined not by priests like father O'Leary, but by our Holy Father, Benedict XVI and the Living Magesterium of the Catholic Church.

If you'd like to place the button on your blog, here is the code.
<a href="http://www.catholicpillowfight.com/neocath.php"><img src="http://www.catholicpillowfight.com/images/neocath.jpg" border="0"></a> Wide Neo Cath
<a href="http://www.catholicpillowfight.com/neocath.php"><img src="http://www.catholicpillowfight.com/images/neocath60x120.jpg" border="0"></a> Thin Neo Cath

If you'll excuse The Matrix reference, I hope the Neo Caths will be "freeing souls" from the slavery of the "Spirit of Vatican II".

Thanks to the vocations department of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis for the blatant rip-off of their recruiting poster.

Also thanks to Charlotte Iona Dymock at Siesta Fonts for the freeware Matrix font. (I would have given you links to the lady, but the links were dead when I tried them.)

Update: a commenter named Maggie writes:
Just to clear something up. That poster is from my Archdiocese and is not from the Vocations office proper but came from an outside source. It has officially been withdrawn from circulation.

Thanks, Maggie.

Update 2: I fixed the link to the original post. It seems to have gotten broken when I converted to the new blog software.
